Dubai driver killed in accident after stopping on Sheikh Zayed Road shoulder

Driver was struck by an approaching vehicle after stepping out to inspect damage following a collision, Dubai Police said

Amotorist was killed after being run over on Sheikh Zayed Road when two vehicles stopped on the left shoulder following an accident, the Dubai Police said on Monday. The incident occurred before Al Yalayis Bridge on the highway heading towards Abu Dhabi.

According to Brigadier Juma bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, the crash involved two vehicles whose drivers stopped on the left road shoulder next to the first (fast) lane – an area where stopping is prohibited except in emergency situations due to the risks involved.

One of the drivers then stepped out of his vehicle to inspect the damage caused by the collision. At that moment, another vehicle approaching from behind struck him on the roadway. Because of the vehicle’s speed and the short distance, the driver was unable to avoid the man, who died at the scene.

Following the incident, Dubai Police warned motorists against stopping on road shoulders unnecessarily and urged drivers to move their vehicles to the nearest safe parking area outside the roadway in the event of a breakdown or emergency.

Authorities stressed that unjustified stopping on road shoulders is a dangerous traffic violation that can lead to serious accidents and disrupt traffic flow.

Bin Suwaidan added that excessive speed and failure to maintain a safe following distance contributed to the severity of the incident. He urged motorists to adhere to speed limits, remain attentive to road conditions and anticipate unexpected situations on highways.

He also emphasised that road shoulders are designated strictly for emergencies such as sudden vehicle breakdowns or medical situations and should not be used for other purposes.

Dubai Police said strict penalties will continue to be enforced against traffic behaviour that endangers lives and property.
